The First Battle of Newbury was fought in 1643 just north of here. Reputedly the name Wash Water derives from the place where women laundered the protagonist's soiled and bloodstained clothes. The Third Battle of Newbury was fought during 1996 as protesters tried to prevent bridges like this one being built to serve the proposed Newbury Bypass.
