The Quayside was originally the location of Whitby Museum where it remained for over 100yrs on the top floor of this waterfront building. Martin Simpson http://www.whitbymuseum.org.uk/personalities/simp.htm was the curator of this museum for a number of years. See Image It brought in many famous visitors, including Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Wilkie Collins. But, by the end of the 19th century more space was required for the ever-growing collections, and in the 1920’s a completely new Museum was built in Pannett Park adjoining the municipal Art Gallery.
