The houses here are some of those built for those working at the Albyn Shale Oil Works. The further up the company hierarchy you were, the further up the hill your house was. These houses were occupied by tradesmen and craftsmen. Managers' houses were at the top of the brae, and the labourers' at the bottom, near the canal.
