Hampstead High Street was one of the first London suburbs outside the ring road to introduce parking meters, and the surrounding roads are almost exclusively resident parking, so the crowds of old are no longer a feature and many shops turn over regularly, no doubt a direct result of turning away passing trade. Some of the older shops had been there 30-40 years or more until then.
