South Gyle is another of these Edinburgh housing estates where all the streets have the same basic name, just with a different suffix. South Gyle Mains presumably recalls a farm which once stood here, and the central part of the estate is this circular green space. Looking at the map, the layout of the estate is like a spider, with a maze of culs-de-sac and blind alleys. Many of the houses do seem to feature elements of traditional vernacular architecture, like outside stairs to the upper floors, and this block is vaguely reminiscent of the Old Town tenements.
