Up Jack and Jill Hill

This small footpath is said to be the one taken by the couple to fetch water. It's not questioned why they went up a hill, as most water issues from lower down a hill but let's not let that spoil the rhyme. Indeed, an inscription at the school mentions that Jack was injured by a boulder from the nearby (and aptly named!) Badstone Quarry. Despite care, he succumbed but left Jill to give birth to their child. Sadly, she died soon after too and the orphan was brought up by villagers. To this day, a large number of local families share the surname Gilson!
