The stone post might well be one side of the original toll bar, it has a hole in the side facing the road, and the OS benchmark is shown on the 1:2500 map of c.1893. The road is not shown as a turnpike road on the 1850 six-inch map, so perhaps it was a private estate toll road built to improve access to the village of Cross Stone from the valley.
