A gloomy day on the rugby pitch. The further posts are in Image; the River Wear is just behind the trees beyond. On the left of the pitch, serving as a grandstand, is the embankment of the former North Eastern Railway from Elvet station which after entering the trees, crossed the river; the line closed in 1954. The camera position is now occupied by Parsons Field Court, university student accommodation. However, the rugby pitch, down on the flood plain, remains.
