Yet another photograph of this station - but back in 1993! View northward, towards Shrewsbury: ex-Great Western & London & North Western Joint (Shrewsbury & Hereford) main line. Formerly an important railway centre, called 'Craven Arms & Stokesay' until 6/5/74, it is still the junction for the Central Wales ('Heart of Wales') line to Swansea via Llandrindod Wells, Llandovery and Llanelli (formerly to Swansea Victoria). Long ago, the independent Bishop's Castle Railway (closed 20/4/36) branched off north of here to the NW, also the ex-GW branch to Much Wenlock (closed 31/12/51) to the NE. Overgrown remnants of the extensive sidings are visible on the left. In the distance is the Long Mynd (1,696 ft.).
