A view of the large triple expansion engine powering the spinning mill here at Trencherfield, Wigan. Built by J & E Wood (Bolton) in 1907, it provided 2100 HP. The engine was designed to run at a constant speed and to be efficient. It uses the expansion of steam three times. So HP steam is injected into Rina to the left, then across to the right in the intermediate cylinder. The steam is then split between the two larger cylinders nearest the flywheel. The engine can be seen with only a few ropes left running up the rope race.
