Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was born in the nearby vicarage. He was a great-great grandson of both the pottery manufacturer, Josiah Wedgwood, and of the eighteenth century intellectual, Erasmus Darwin. Another famous relative was his great-uncle, Charles Darwin. He composed orchestral music, including nine symphonies, choral works, operas and other stage works.
