The current building dates from 1764 and was largely a rebuild from a much older house dating back to 1558. The house passed through various families until it was purchased by Brighton council in 1926 who still own it today. Between 1939 and 2007 they leased it to the Youth Hostel Association but since they left it has not been used though they are currently plans to use it as offices.
