Viewed from the elevated graveyard of Image, the cottages were built in the first part of the 19th century and were originally known as Pond Cottages due to the fact they faced the old village pond which once stood in the snow covered open space in the foreground of the picture. The pond was one of the springs feeding the Wellesborne, Brighton's lost river.
