All of the larger trees in this shot are London planes - some of the oldest and largest I have seen. My guess is that the biggest are at least 200 years old. Why they were sited here puzzles me - they look like trees marking the boundary of a country estate, rather than the boundary of common land. A map dated 1787 shows that a number of substantial properties once stood facing this side of the heath. So perhaps these trees survive from an avenue - the rest having been felled to accommodate a wider road.
