Wilberforce House, High Street, Kingston upon Hull

William Wilberforce, 1759-1833, the Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull and Yorkshire, and campaigner for the abolition of slavery, was born here. The Kingston upon Hull Corporation bought the house in 1903 and, in 1906, it was opened as a museum of furniture and of material relevant to the life of Wilberforce. A statue of Wilberforce stands in the garden to the front of the house. It is most likely that the facade, with features so similar to those of Crowle House, also in High Street, dates from circa 1660. Image
