Bankfield, the Italianate villa of the textile industrialist Colonel Edward Akroyd was purchased by Halifax Corporation in 1886. A year later it was converted into a museum. It is now the home of the Duke of Wellington regimental collection. Appropriately the museum is also an important centre for textiles and crafts. The delightful Bankfield estate was renamed Akroyd Park and opened to the public - many of whom worked in the Akroyd textile mills.
