Woolwich Barracks, built between 1776-1802, seen from Grand Depot Road (the A205). Their use by the Royal Artillery ended with the departure of 16 Regiment in July 2007, after which time the future use of them seemed uncertain. However, because the lease of the barracks housing the King’s Horse Artillery troop in St John's Wood ran out in March 2012 a decision was taken to rehouse the troop here from February 2012. Many of the King's Troop's duties are ceremonial and one of the benefits of the former St John's Wood site was its proximity to central London, a 40-minute hack from Buckingham Palace. This site will obviously not afford them this luxury however, it seems that a staging post will be provided at another central London barracks to allow horses and troops to break their journeys.
