This medieval cross was once one of eight scattered around the perimeters of Ripon, and is now the only one remaining in situ. Its function was as a sanctuary cross, and any wrongdoer or criminal could claim sanctuary at the Abbey of St Wilfred for a year and a day, once within the sanctuary limits. Is the cross, and the 2 or 3 square metres of grass around it, the smallest property maintained by the National Trust?
