A station opened here in 1843 and was rebuilt several times as the network expanded and contracted. For most of its life it was a junction station from Darlington (behind camera) to Weardale (straight on) and Durham (platforms curved to right, now a supermarket). When this image was taken, it had been reduced to a branch line from Darlington.
