Church Hill is a short street that links High Street with the parish church of St George. According to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_buildings_in_Ramsgate - the octagonal lantern that surmounts the tower was added as a navigational aid for shipping; the different colour of the stone used in the upper half of the tower appears to confirm that it was a later extension.
