Wooden rowing boats, if stored out of water for maintenance, dry out and the wood shrinks, opening gaps between their planks. To make them watertight again, they need to be submerged for a period so the wood will swell again and close up any gaps. Here one of the Edinburgh Canal Society's boats, named Gladhouse 2, is being rescued after a time sunk in the Union Canal.
