The obelisk is about twenty feet high, and is the work of Milne & Wishart of Aberdeen. It commemorates William Whyte, a Dumbarton councillor and shipowner, and his wife and children. William died on the 15th of July 1872, aged 55. His wife Catherine Lang (d. 27th January 1897) was the sister of the Dumbarton distiller John Lang (the Langs of Townend were one of the venerable Dumbarton families). In the background is the driveway near the western boundary of this part of the cemetery.
