Sadly, since the various financial disasters of the early 20th century, the real management of the bank is no longer here, but the impressive building continues to dominate the view from Princes Street, especially when floodlit. It was originally built by Robert Reid and Richard Crichton in 1802-6 when Viscount Melville was chairman of the bank, and greatly altered and extended in 1863 by David Bryce.
