Jordan Lane cottages

Two survivors of a row of small cottages, known as Jordan Bank Cottages, some of which were demolished to make room for Morningside's first tenement block built in 1857 seen on the right of the picture. George Meikle Kemp, the architect of the Scott Monument, is known to have moved to this lane from a cottage in Canaan Lane, but the evidence as to exactly where he lived is confused. Local historian Charles J Smith explained that it was believed Kemp lived at 1 Jordan Lane (hence his house must be one of the demolished cottages). However, he also pointed out that the directory address, on which the belief is based, is not Jordan 1, as thought, but Jordan l, standing for Jordan Lane. If this is the case, he could have lived elsewhere in the lane, and so far his house has not been conclusively unidentified. Some think it might have been the cottage shown here on the left.
