Or what's left of it. These bricked-up windows once belonged to Bloomsbury Cottage, which was for six years the home of George Meikle Kemp, architect of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens. Kemp, who had worked as a carpenter building tenements in the city, conceived his design for the monument here. His was one of fifty entries received by the committee charged with erecting a memorial to Scotland's greatest literary figure of the century. His entry came third, but since the committee was not satisfied with any of the designs Kemp resubmitted it after alterations and it was accepted.
