This pit is a remnant of a former brickworks that once occupied the site to the immediate north of Berwick station. Once part of Berwick Common the brickworks opened around 1880 and continued in operation until the mid 1960s. It was connected to the railway by a small gauged tramline. After closure the site remained derelict for more than twenty years allowing scrub and woodland to recolonise the former pits and become an important natural habitat for a number of plants and wildlife. there were proposals to build a new housing estate on the site in the last few years but this appears to have been rejected for the time being.
