This used to be the junction where the Derby to Ashby railway, which passed through Melbourne, met the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. The main line to Birmingham, heading off to the right, is still very much in use, but the line to Melbourne is now a single-track goods line serving only the Rolls-Royce aero engine works. The rest of the line, through Chellaston towards Melbourne, was closed in the 1960s.
