The memorial is to Sir Robert Geffrye, one time merchant and Lord Mayor of London who died, aged 90, in 1703 and his wife, Percilla, who died aged 42 in 1676. He bequeathed the 14 almshouses constructed in 1715 that now house the Geffrye Museum.
