The stone built bridge (Twelve Arches Bridge) carried the Grand Junction Railway from Warrington to Birmingham across the river Mersey and the Runcorn and Latchford Canal. It was opened in 1837. The foreground bridge was built in the 1890s when it was necessary to divert other railway lines through this area when the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed.
