The water in the foreground is a portion of the Summerlee Branch of the Monkland Canal that has been restored as part of the Summerlee industrial museum in Coatbridge. The branch, which was opened about 1820 to serve a series of ironworks, originally passed by the children's playground and joined the main line of the canal beyond the trees in the background. The high stone wall on the left and the low plinth to the left of the gravel path are the remains of a railway bridge by which a siding ran off the North British Railway's Coatbridge and Bothwell branch, which ran behind the trees on the left, into the ironworks site.
