View SE, towards Kirkby Stephen and Darlington: ex-NER Stainmore Line, Darlington - Barnard Castle - Kirkby Stephen - Penrith. This line used to connect here with the Midland's Settle - Carlisle main line but the station (Appleby East from 1/7/50) was closed 22/1/62 when the line over Stainmore was closed, although goods traffic continued to Penrith from here until 2/11/64. The line from Appleby to Warcop was retained for use by the Army until 5/87, then mothballed - as here in 1991, but was acquired by the Eden Valley Railway Society in 1995 and has run trains from Warcop part of the way to Appleby irregularly since 2002.
