A remnant of the industrial past of this area, possibly connected with the area being the site of the National Explosives Factory. Over 1800 people were employed, producing Cordite, Gelatine, Nitro-Glycerine and Gelignite for the Army and the Navy, until the works closed in 1919 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1463206.
