The Wells road originally carried on down the hill following the line of the houses shown in the image and became Claverton St next to the railway viaduct. However it was diverted towards the photographers position and a loop was made in the road so that it joined at right angles a new roundabout which has the viaduct at its centre. This diversion made the new road, the A367, considerably higher than the old one, and the new road is at the first floor level of some of the houses on the old road which has become a by-road.
