The weir and sluice gate allows water to flow from the river Avon into Stanchard Pit which then joins the river Severn half a mile away. The river Avon on the right continues and flows into the river Severn opposite Lower Lode, this part of the Avon between this weir and the river's confluence with the Severn is known as Mill Avon, passing the former mills of Healing's Mill and Abbey Mill on its journey. At the time of the picture the river was in flood and therefore there is no fall over the weir. The span crossing the river in the background it not the original railway bridge, the original was removed many years ago, this is a replacement, less robust bridge, which provides access to the marina.
