One of the main employers of the area in the 1800s were the Porritt family who built Stubbins Vale mill in 1851 and the Ramsbottom Spinning and Manufacturing Co., a co-operative of working men, whose 1861 factory was christened Union Mill. Most of the houses in present day Strongstry, like those above, date from the 19th century and were built by the Porritts to house their mill workers.
