Erected by the Governors of Christ's Hospital, London, in memory of the "Magnificent Benefactor" Henry Stone, Lord of the Manor of Skellingthorpe, who died in 1693. In his will he gave land to Christ's Hospital, London. On the land they built cottages, a school and the pub in his memory.
