As a teenager in the 1950s I recall these groups of Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) as the only things of any character along this wide, dull, busy road. This and another group occupy the strip of land between the road and the railway, so perhaps they date from the building of the line which, at this point, is the junction for Torquay or Plymouth.
