The Bessemer Converter standing at the visitor’s entrance to Kelham Island Museum is one of only three remaining converters in the world. It was used by the British Steel Corporation in Workington until 1975 but was then brought to the Museum in 1978 as an example of this revolutionary tool used in converting iron into steel. To the right is a reed-enriched goit (mill race) - a spur from off the River Don - that previously powered some of the neighbourhood water wheels. The modern, red-brick building ahead is part of the "Kelham Riverside" mixed housing and leisure complex.
