Having surfaced briefly by Pond Hill and then having passed under the Ponds Forge district, the River Sheaf flows through a huge cavern before joining the River Don here beside Blonk Street Bridge. Blonk Street was named after Benjamin Blonk, a tenant of Castle Orchards water wheel (circa 1750s-1770s). The Alexandra pub (named after the former Alexandra Opera House whose rear entrance emptied out onto Castlegate) is now boarded up, as is the public toilet block that appears to have been built into the bridge structure at the Blonk Street/Castlegate junction (Note the small windows overlooking the converging rivers).
