Ruins of Old St.James' church, of Saxon foundation but this west doorway is clearly Norman. New St.James' church opened in 1862 and the old church fell into disuse until it was restored in 1869. It was virtually destroyed by German Shelling in the Second World War, but the ruins preserved as a memorial to the suffering of the people of Dover .... known locally as "the tidy ruin".
