South Middleton was formerly the site of a watermill http://www.keystothepast.info/article/10339/Site-Details?PRN=N1794 and it is likely that the current pond (shown on the 1st Edition OS maps) acted as the millpond. The dam on the left hand side of the photo is now adjacent to a small car park used by the local farming community and by occasional walkers. On the day we visited there was a shoot on and it was packed with cars.
