The backs of the houses look over the retaining wall on the north side of the railway cutting that slices through Teignmouth. It is built of, or faced with the grey Devonian limestone of the area, while the garden walls at the top are of the coarse Teignmouth breccia and sandstone. Garden rockery plants have seeded themselves in crevices in the wall.
