The Warleggan River (or River Bedalder) flows to the immediate east of this pit but the clue as to its original purpose lies in the adjacent mica dams. These are formed from the spoil of china clay extraction. This clay mineral is a part of a group of industrial minerals with various uses See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_clay
