This picture of an entrance to St Edmund's Burial Ground (a.k.a St Edmund's Pleasance) is taken from the corner of Great Queen's Street at its junction with East Hill (A226) visible on the left. This former cemetery is maintained as an open space by the Borough Council. Richard Trevithick (1771-1833), the Cornish mining engineer and inventor is buried here having died here. He was lodging at the Bull Hotel in the High Street whilst contributing to some work on an engine being developed by John Hall, founder of J. & E. Hall Ltd. However, after he had been working in Dartford for about a year, Trevithick died of pneumonia in his hotel room. He was penniless with no relatives or friends and as a result his colleagues at Hall's Works made a collection for his funeral expenses and acted as his bearers to this burial ground.
