The Welsh journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley,(1841-1904) - born John Rowlands - laid the foundation stone for this cottage hospital on 21st April 1894. It is now run by the West Kent Primary Care Trust "for the care and rehabilitation of older patients recovering from illness or injury" having previously been a GP referral unit with a male ward, a female ward, x-ray facilities and a physiotherapy service. Phil May, a stage name for the 60s lead singer in The Pretty Things pop group was born in the former maternity unit - behind the photographer - on 9 November 1944.
