This impressive building seems to consist of two parts. That on the left has the inscription "Ansdell Institute" above its front entrance. Below is a banner saying "Ansdell Institute & Social Club". The building on the right has the inscription "Public Hall" above its entrance. Below that it says "Ansdell Sports & Social Club". Its various facilities are also listed and it has a sports bar. Whether these two clubs are one and the same isn't clear. Ansdell is said to be the only place in England named after an artist. The artist being the painter Richard Ansdell R.A. (1815-1885). He was fond of hunting and shooting scenes, and amongst his paintings are several large oils of spaniel dogs holding dead pheasants in their mouths. Image Image Image
