Gravel bank on Rockford Common, New Forest

During the 1960s the western part of Rockford Common was subject to large-scale gravel extraction. The plans had been resisted but the gravel operator's plans were approved following a public enquiry. One of the arguments in favour of the quarrying was that it would be a "valuable experiment in heathland restoration". The bank in this photo (and the one below the photographer) are on the edges of the scooped-out area - on which a little the gorse and scrub has re-established.
