The PYO movement began to gather momentum during the 1970's and 80's. The convenience of supermarkets and the hectic pace of modern life have been adverse influences of this way of directly connecting food producers and consumers. Contacts still in the trade tell me that they also lose about 5% to 10% of their crops due to scrumping and carelessness on the part of the customer. It's a pity that a good idea, which reduces 'Food Miles', hasn't found wider favour in practice.
