The 200 acres of Selsdon Wood was saved in the 1920s when it became the joint responsibility of the Croydon Corporation and the Urban District Council of Coulsdon & Purley, with ownership being vested in The National Trust. This footpath leading into Selsdon Wood from the Forestdale Estate is followed by both the London LOOP and the Vanguard Way. The former is a 152 mile circle around London, largely through the Green Belt, while the latter is a 66 mile route from East Croydon to Newhaven.
