Built largely in two stages, firstly the eastern (nearer) end in 1775 onwards with the western end added in 1802 onwards. The ornate central triumphal arch along with the white colonnaded link blocks were added in 1806 as part of the same development phase. In all the frontage is around 300m long. Further buildings are behind the main frontage, with the whole complex once forming the largest barracks in the country. The Royal Artillery moved to Larkhill in Wiltshire in 2007, although the site continues to have army use.
